In today’s blog, we’ll be breaking down exactly what the primary types of injectable treatments are, how they work, and how they can help you improve the condition of your skin and feel more comfortable in your own body. It’s time to dispel the stigma around injectable skin treatments. Let’s get started!

Types Of Injectables

Injectables are a type of skin treatment that involve injecting solutions directly into a target treatment area, often a specific part of the face, such as one’s cheekbones or forehead. Receiving an injectable skin treatment is a minimally invasive procedure that can be completed fairly quickly! Depending on the type of injection you choose, you may begin to see improvement in the treatment area(s) in as little as one day to a few days, and results can last anywhere from a couple months to several years. There are two primary types of injectables, neuromodulators and dermal fillers.

What They Are: Neuromodulators are injectable skin treatments that are derived from neurotoxins that change the ways that muscles behave when injected into them in very small amounts. Specifically, neuromodulators encourage muscle relaxation. The most well-known neuromodulators are Botox and Dysport, the former having been used in clinical settings since the 1980s.

How They Work: The muscles in one’s body are controlled by an intricate system of nerve signals, chemical messengers, and chemical receptors. This system connects your brain to every part of your body, allowing your brain to monitor and oversee every aspect of your physical experience, as well as exercise control over the thousands upon thousands of different muscles in your body.

For each action you take or physical sensation you experience, your body and brain must communicate using these signals and chemical messengers. For example, if you wanted to raise one eyebrow quizzically at the information you’re reading right now, your brain would send a signal to the nerves in the area of your eyebrow’s muscle to produce the chemicals that will tell the eyebrow to contract in an arch-like fashion. The nerve emits those chemicals, the eyebrow muscle receives the chemical messenger in its receptors, and it performs the action.

Neuromodulators like Botox enter this equation at the chemical level. When injected into a facial muscle (or wherever else), the Botox particles fill the chemical receptors of the muscle with the message to relax itself, leading to a relaxation of the muscles in the treated area.

How They’re Useful: Botox, Dysport, and other neuromodulators are useful in cosmetic settings as a way to prevent the deepening of facial wrinkles, such as frown lines and wrinkles in the eyebrow area. Wrinkles are formed and made deeper by the repeated contraction of specific muscles over time, so by restricting the contraction of certain facial muscles, neuromodulators temporarily prevent the wrinkles in these areas from becoming deeper or otherwise more noticeable.

The muscle-relaxant properties of neuromodulators make them useful in clinical settings as well! Botox can be used to treat certain muscle-related conditions, including chronic migraines and certain types of muscle spasms.

Natural Dermal Fillers

What They Are: Dermal fillers are gel-like substances made up primarily of hyaluronic acid, a chemical that occurs naturally in the human body. There are several different brands of dermal fillers, including Restylane, Juvederm, Perlane, and Sculptra, among others.

How They Work: Whereas neuromodulators relax muscle movement in order to prevent the deepening of existing wrinkles, dermal fillers are used to fill in wrinkles and smooth out skin. When injected into a target treatment area, hyaluronic acid and the other primarily natural chemicals in dermal fillers absorb into the skin, smoothing out wrinkles in the area, improving skin volume, clarity, and contour, and stimulating the growth of new collagen.

Unfortunately, the results are not permanent, as your body will naturally absorb and dispose of the acid gradually over time as it regulates itself in order to return to its normal state. However, you can expect dermal fillers to provide a boost to target areas for up to 12 weeks after treatment.

Why They’re Useful: Natural dermal fillers are effective ways to temporarily enjoy smoother, brighter, younger-looking skin. Because they’re composed of chemicals that occur naturally in your body, the risk of your body rejecting the treatment, or other odd complications, is virtually zero. You can also enhance and restore volume to target areas of skin on your face, not just diminish the appearance of wrinkles.
